Lindsay Ellis was born in Johnson City (Tennessee) under the name Lindsay Carole Ellis. She was adopted by James Caroll Ellis, and Sue Ellis, on 24 November 1984.

James, her father, was a Cloudland High School graduate (1961). He also completed his bachelor’s in Music Education at ETSU and a master’s in education. He was a US Navy Veteran, a contractor and a musician. Although he played many musical instruments, his greatest accomplishment was as a pianist. Due to complications of Parkinson’s Disease, he died on 23 October 2015.

Lindsay’s mother Sue is a Science Hill school counselor.

Lindsay received her Bachelor of Arts in Cinema Studies degree from New York University in 2007. She also received her Master of Arts in Cinematography and Film/Video Production degree from the University of Southern California.
